The average cost of living in the England (outside London) for students is 1,015 pounds per month; this includes rent, food, household goods, personal items, travel and leisure. For those studying in London, the living cost per month is 1,265 pounds. Therefore what you expecting to spend annually for a living outside London is 12,180 pounds while inner London is 15,180 pounds.

After secondary school in Nigeria, you will need an A level or foundation certificate to get into university in the UK.

A level Programme in the United Kingdom

A-level programme are UK Pre University programme you need to do for a period of two years after you finished year 12 or year 11 of secondary school. The programme is designed for students that want to study Medical related courses and for those that want to study at top ranked universities in the UK i.e. Oxford university, University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, London School of Economics, University of Durham, University College London.

International Foundation Year in the United Kingdom

This is one-year intensive course that leads to wide range of Universities in the United Kingdom; pathway providers or colleges mainly run it. It is designed as an alternative to conventional A-level route which takes two years. However some Foundation programme will restrict the student to some particular university while some colleges or pathway providers will enable to progress to wide range of universities that recognized the foundation.

The entry requirements for International Foundation Programme are as follows:

Undergraduate Programme in the United Kingdom

To study undergraduate programme in the United Kingdom you must have finished 12 years of education (WAEC/NECO. In addition to this, you do international Foundation programme or International Baccalaureate (IB)/ A-Level in the UK or with recognized colleges that offers them here in Nigeria and because English Language is our second language, you are required to have achieved an acceptable level of English Language Proficiency. For undergraduate programmes, the required grade is usually IELTS Overall Score of 6.0 This is just a basic minimum requirement.

The minimum general requirement for graduate studies in United Kingdom is a four-year post-secondary degree honors or HND with GPA of 3.5 (2.1) or (2.2) from a recognized Nigerian Universities . Also you should have an acceptable level of English Language Proficiency usually a 6.5 Overall IELTS Score. This is just a basic requirement as many institutions and graduate studies departments have their specific additional requirements.

Pre Masters Programme in the United Kingdom

This programme is designed for students that did not meet up the course entry requirements, the programme is done for 1 or 2 terms to enable the student to come up with entry requirement of the university and before you will go into the pre masters you must have finished four years post-secondary education and also take acceptable English language proficiency, IELTS of 5.5.

Below are basic requirements for pre master’s programme in the United Kingdom..

The major course start dates of universities and colleges in the United Kingdom are Fall Term (September to October) and winter term (January). Also some universities, colleges, and pathway providers run summer term (May to June).

The UK Visas and Immigration Office requires students that are studying a course that will last longer than 6 months to obtain a Tier (4) Student (General) for 16 years and above or Tier (4) Student (Child) for 15 years old and younger as well as for A-level students.

To apply for any of these visa’s categories, you will require the following supporting documents:

  • Confirmation of Acceptance of Study (CAS). The University or college must provide this for the student and it must contain the following information:
    • Unconditional offer of Admission: Your offer must be unconditional; it means you have met all the university or college entry requirements.
    • Confirmation of Acceptance of Study number; this is a unique number for your study and without this number you will not be issued visa.
    • It must indicate course start date and end date
    • It will state the course duration
  • A current passport or other travel documentation that is valid at least for 6 months.
  • Academic Result on the school letterhead (Transcripts/WAEC/NECO)
  • Parental or Legal guardian consent letter if you are under 18 years of age.
  • Birth certificate. This is usually required to show relationship between student and their sponsors.
  • Tuberculosis Test Certificate from International Organization for Migration (IOM)
  • IHS payment receipt (Health Surcharge)
  • Two (2) passport photographs (colored copy on a white background)
  • All certificate and Diploma programme if applicable
  • Post-Secondary School Transcript if applicable
  • NYSC certificate (if applicable)
  • Personal Bank statement or Government sponsorship letter or the student should provide his/ her Biological parent’s bank statement showing the tuition fees stated on the offer letter if not paid and cost of Living for 9 months having stayed in the account for a minimum of 28 consecutive days.

International students with your Tier 4 (General) Visa, you are allowed to work up to 20 hours per week in the United Kingdom during their studies provided you are studying undergraduate or postgraduate programme with a Higher Education Institutions or Overseas Higher Education recognized by UKVI.

International students with Tier 4 visa can work on campus if there is an opening for job, which universities usually advertise on the school billboard. But before taking any job, work placement or Internship, even for unpaid, paid or volunteer position, check if your visa status allows you to work and if so, how many hours can you work per week. International Student can work as student’s Union officer in the school where you are studying.

Please note as an international you cannot exceed the working hours stated in your visa or BRP during the term but you can work full time during vacation. Always check the sticker in your passport or Biometric residence permit (BRP) to know if it permits you to work and number of hours you can work.

Students with Tier 4visa can work up to 10 to 20 hours per week off-campus. the work can be paid or unpaid job. Please discuss with your employer the number of hours you have to work during term but you can work full time during vacation.

Note students aged 16 are not allowed to work in the United Kingdom.

International students who wish to remain in the UK after they have graduated must apply for a work visa from UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). After graduation, students are allowed to apply for the following visas:

Tier 2 (General) Visa

This is the primary visa to remain and work in the UK after your studies. It is open to recent graduates with a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD from a recognized UK university. Before you apply you must have an offer or a skilled job from a licensed employer and be paid a salary of at least 20,800 pounds. After five years of employment, Tier 2 visa holders can apply for indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK providing they meet the salary requirements of 35,000 pounds and other relevant eligibility criteria.

Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur) Visa

This visa option is open to all students who are developing a world-class business idea. You will need to be identified and sponsored by your university as having the potential to create your own business in the UK. This applies to all graduating students from any subject discipline.

Tier 4 (Student) Visa

If you are a student completing a PhD at a UK higher education institute, you can apply to stay in the UK for a further 12 months after your course completion date. Your university will sponsor you and you will have full-unrestricted work rights, except for some limited professions such as doctors or dentists.
